What makes a rent receipt count.
A rent receipt is only useful for tax if it carries the right details. Here is what has to be on it, and the rules on the landlord PAN and the revenue stamp.
Proof for your HRA claim
Rent receipts are the evidence your employer and the tax department ask for when you claim House Rent Allowance. Each receipt shows the rent you paid for a month and who you paid it to.
The details that must be on it
A valid rent receipt names the tenant and the landlord, the rented address, the amount and the month it covers, the date of payment and the landlord signature. This tool fills in all of them.
Landlord PAN over a lakh
If your rent comes to more than 1,00,000 rupees in a year, you have to report the landlord PAN with your HRA claim. There is a field for it, and it prints on every receipt when you add it.
Revenue stamp on cash rent
A cash payment above 5,000 rupees needs a one rupee revenue stamp across the signature. Turn the note on and the receipt marks the spot, so you know where to affix it.
One receipt per month
HRA is usually claimed month by month, so the tool splits your period into separate receipts, one for each month, each with its own number and date, all in a single PDF.

Common rent receipt questions.
A rent receipt is a written acknowledgement from a landlord that they received rent from a tenant for a given month. It names both sides, the rented property, the amount and the month, and it carries the date of payment and the landlord signature. It is the standard proof of rent paid, most often used to claim House Rent Allowance.
Yes. To claim House Rent Allowance from your salary, your employer asks for rent receipts as proof that you actually paid rent. Most employers want a receipt for each month of the period you are claiming, which is why this tool generates one receipt per month in a single PDF.
A rent receipt should show the tenant name, the landlord name and address, the address of the rented property, the rent amount in figures and words, the month it covers, the date of payment and the landlord signature. If the yearly rent is above a lakh, it should also carry the landlord PAN. This generator captures all of these.
You need to report the landlord PAN when your total rent for the year is more than 1,00,000 rupees, which works out to about 8,334 rupees a month. Below that, the PAN is not mandatory. The tool has a field for the PAN and prints it on every receipt once you enter it, and reminds you when your rent crosses the limit.
A revenue stamp of one rupee is needed only when the rent is paid in cash and the amount is above 5,000 rupees for that receipt. The landlord signs across the stamp. If the rent was paid by bank transfer, UPI or cheque, no revenue stamp is required. Turn on the note in the tool and the receipt marks where the stamp goes.
