How it works

How to send large files without uploading.

Most file sharing works by uploading your file to a company, storing it, and giving the other person a link to download it back. This skips the middle entirely.

Create a link

Open the tool on the device holding the files and pick "I have the files". You get a six character code, a link and a QR code. Nothing has been uploaded, because there is nothing to upload yet.

Send the code across

Message the link, read the six characters out loud, or point a phone camera at the QR code. Any channel works, because the code by itself is useless once the transfer is done.

The browsers connect

When the other side opens the link, the two browsers work out a route to each other and open an encrypted channel. On the same office network they usually connect in about a second.

Drop the files in

Drag files onto the panel or paste them. They stream straight across with live progress. Either side can send, so the person receiving can send something back on the same connection.

What it does

Why there is no size limit.

Every limit you are used to on a file sharing site exists because the site has to store your file. Take away the storage and the limits go with it.

No size limit, because there is no upload

Email caps you at a handful of megabytes and most transfer sites cap the free tier somewhere around two gigabytes. There is no cap here because the file never lands on a server that would have to store it. A 40 GB video goes across the same way a spreadsheet does, limited only by how fast the two connections are.

Encrypted end to end, and you can check it

The channel uses DTLS, the same family of encryption as HTTPS, negotiated directly between the two browsers. Once connected, both screens show a six digit verification code derived from the encryption keys. If the numbers match on both ends, nobody is sitting in the middle, including us.

Nothing to delete afterwards

There is no copy on a server to expire, no retention window to trust and no breach that could ever expose the file, because no server involved in the transfer ever held it. When you close the tab, the only copies are the two on your own devices.

Files and text, both directions

Send documents, video, disk images, archives, anything. Or switch to the text tab and push across a note, a config block, a long URL or some JSON that would be miserable to retype. The connection is symmetric, so both sides can send.

No account, no email, no app

Nothing to sign up for and nothing to install on either device. It works between a laptop and a phone, across two offices, or between you and a client who will never install your file sharing tool of choice.

Verifiably private, not just promised

Most tools ask you to believe a privacy policy. This one is arranged so that believing us is optional. Open your browser network tab during a transfer and you will see a few kilobytes of connection setup, then silence, while the file moves.

Phone to laptop, with no cable

Open the tool on your laptop, tap the QR code with your phone camera, and the two are connected. Move photos, videos and scans across without a cable, without emailing them to yourself, and without them passing through a cloud account first.

Between Mac, Windows, Android and iPhone

AirDrop only talks to Apple devices and Nearby Share only to its own. This runs in the browser, so a Mac can send to a Windows laptop, an Android phone to an iPhone, and a Linux desktop to any of them, with no app on either end.

Video files that are too large to email

A few minutes of phone video already breaks the 25 MB attachment limit that most mail providers enforce. There is no size limit here, so raw footage, screen recordings and exported edits go across whole rather than being compressed down first.

Sending work to a client

Design masters, print-ready artwork, legal bundles and database dumps are exactly the files people would rather not park on a third party server. The client needs no account and installs nothing, they just open a link.

Between two computers you own

Moving a project between a desktop and a laptop is faster over a direct connection than uploading it to a drive and pulling it back down, because it only makes the trip once. On the same Wi-Fi it runs at local network speed.

Passing text and links between devices

Switch to the text tab for a long URL, a block of JSON, an address, a wifi password or a config snippet. It saves retyping something from a phone screen into a laptop, or the other way round.

The legal position, plainly

Because we never receive what you transfer, Techliphant is not a controller or a processor of your file contents under the GDPR or the UK GDPR, and not a Data Fiduciary for them under India Digital Personal Data Protection Act. There is no storage of your material, so there is no retention schedule covering it and no breach that could expose it.

The connection setup does include IP addresses, which is personal data. We process it for one purpose, delivering the connection you asked for, which is performance of the service you requested under Article 6(1)(b) GDPR and a legitimate use under section 7 of the DPDP Act. It is held in memory for seconds, never written to logs or disk, and deleted when the connection opens.

The tool sets no cookies and reads no browser storage, so there is nothing requiring consent under the ePrivacy rules and no banner to click through. No analytics event records a transfer, and nothing about a session survives it.

Two things worth being honest about

Connecting uses public STUN servers. To find a route between two devices, browsers ask a public server what their address looks like from the outside. We use the free STUN servers operated by Google and Cloudflare. Those servers see the request and therefore your IP address. They never see any file content, because they play no part in the transfer itself.

You are responsible for what you send. We have no ability to inspect, filter or take down anything, because none of it passes through us. The tool is for lawful transfers of material you have the right to share. Anything else is between you, the person receiving, and the law that applies to you both.

Every file your product stores on behalf of a user is storage you pay for, security you have to prove, and a retention obligation you have to answer for when a regulator or a client security questionnaire asks. Common questions.

Most mail providers reject anything over about 25 MB, and some corporate systems cut off lower. The usual answers are to upload the file somewhere and send a link, or to compress it until it fits. This tool takes the third route: it connects your browser directly to the other person browser and streams the file across, so the attachment limit never applies and nothing needs uploading first. Open the tool, create a link, send the six character code, and drop the file in when they connect.

Open this page on the laptop, choose "I have the files" or "I was sent a code" depending on which way the file is going, and scan the QR code with your phone camera. That connects the two devices in a browser tab each, with no cable, no app and no account. On the same Wi-Fi it runs at local network speed, so even large videos move quickly.

Yes, in any combination. AirDrop only works between Apple devices and Quick Share only within its own ecosystem, which is why sending from an Android phone to a MacBook, or an iPhone to a Windows laptop, is usually awkward. This runs in the browser, so the operating systems on either end do not have to agree on anything.

There is no limit set by the tool. Because the file is never uploaded to a server, there is no storage quota to run into. What actually limits you is the slower of the two internet connections and the free space on the receiving device. People move multi gigabyte video and disk images through it routinely. On a phone, keep an eye on free storage, since the received file has to fit.

Yes, and this is the one real trade off. The file goes straight from one browser to the other, so both tabs have to be open together, the same way a call needs both people to pick up. If you need someone to collect a file tomorrow, this is the wrong tool and email or a shared drive is the right one. What you get in exchange is that no copy of your file sits on anyone else server waiting to be collected.

Yes. The connection uses DTLS, which is the same encryption family that protects HTTPS, and the keys are negotiated directly between the two browsers. Nobody in between can read the contents, including your network operator and including us. The verification code shown on both screens lets you confirm that for yourself rather than taking it on trust.

It is calculated from the encryption keys the two browsers agreed on, so it depends on who is genuinely at each end. If someone managed to insert themselves in the middle of the connection, the two devices would be showing different numbers. Read the six digits aloud or compare them on screen. If they match, the connection is direct. It is the standard check used by encrypted calling apps and it takes about two seconds.

Only the handshake. To connect, each browser has to tell the other how it can be reached, which is a couple of kilobytes of technical description that includes IP addresses. Our server passes that between the two devices and deletes it as soon as the connection opens. It never receives a filename, a byte of file content or any message text, and it does not write any of the handshake to logs or to disk.

The design removes most of the surface those laws are concerned with. We are not a data controller for file contents, because we never receive them, so there is no storage, no retention period and no breach exposure covering what you transfer. The handshake data does include IP addresses, which counts as personal data under GDPR and the DPDP Act. We process it only to deliver the connection you asked for, hold it in memory for seconds, never log it and delete it on completion. No cookies or device storage are used, so ePrivacy consent does not arise, and there is no profiling, tracking or advertising anywhere in the tool.

We cannot, and that is deliberate. There is no copy of your file passing through us to inspect. It also means the responsibility for what you transfer sits entirely with you and the person you are sending to. Use it for lawful purposes and for material you have the right to share.

A small share of networks block direct connections between devices. Strict corporate firewalls and some mobile carrier networks are the usual culprits. If it fails, the quickest fixes are to put both devices on the same Wi-Fi, switch one of them off the corporate VPN, or have one side tether to a phone. On ordinary home and office networks it connects almost every time.

Compress it into a ZIP first and send that. It is one file to keep track of, it preserves the folder structure, and it usually transfers faster than the same content as loose files. Our archive converter can build one for you if you need it.

The transfer stops and is marked as failed rather than saving a half written file. Nothing partial is handed to you as though it were complete. Every file is also checksummed as it goes, and the receiving side compares the result before offering the download, so a file that arrives damaged is reported rather than saved.

Plenty of people do, particularly for material they would rather not put on a third party server: design masters, raw footage, database dumps, legal bundles. Two things to keep in mind. Both people need to be at their machines at the same time, and you should still follow whatever your own agreements say about handling client material.

That is why they cap the free tier, usually around 2 GB, and why the file sits on someone else infrastructure until it expires. Here the file makes the trip once, straight to the other person, so there is no cap and no stored copy. The trade is that they have to be there to receive it, where a link works whenever they get round to it.

None of the three, on either end. It is a web page. The person receiving does not sign up, install anything or give you an email address, which is usually the sticking point when you need to send something to a client or to someone outside your company.
